Food Pantry Director

PURPOSE:  Conduct all business related to Du Nord Foundation / Eat for Equity Food Pantry including procurement and distribution of food and basic supplies to community members. Build procedures and organization for a new year-round food pantry to serve south Minneapolis. Train and manage staff and volunteers to ensure that client needs are met. Embrace our shared organizational values to nourish our neighbors with equity and care. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

STAFF and VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT

  • Hire, train and supervise staff and contractors
  • Schedule staff, manage labor in accordance to Quarterly / Annual Budget goals
  • Supervise and train staff to ensure proper procedures and safe food handling
  • Organize and oversee food distribution process with help of other staff and volunteers
  • Recruit, schedule, train and orient a diverse pool of volunteers [especially those with specific skill sets such as languages spoken]

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Design and build a customer-focused model that provides consistent and culturally-appropriate services and professional, caring communication [in multiple languages] 
  • Adapt model as needed to provide customer service, in collaboration with other team members and community feedback
  • Manage client parking and entry/exit from pantry with the help of other warehouse staff and volunteers, to maintain social distancing in the space
  • Manage customer appointment system and organize packing for distributions

FOOD MANAGEMENT

  • Implement food pantry safety policies and procedures, including state and local guidelines, FIFO (first in, first out) practices to ensure food quality and minimize waste
  • Build and maintain relationships with vendors, striving for partnerships with local farmers / producers and prioritizing women & minority-owned or operated businesses
  • Order and receive food invoices from food banks and vendors, and receive and record food donations
  • Maintain adequate food supply to provide the best quality food for ~1600 clients/month within budget
  • Stock warehouse and ensure that all food is sorted and stored in a safe manner
  • Inventory food quarterly and provide required food bank reports

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

  • Develop layout and setup of the food pantry, and maintain a clean, well-ordered warehouse and property
  • Perform minor facility maintenance
  • Operate forklift (will provide training for forklift)
  • Ensure all equipment – forklift, pallet jacks – and facility stay in good working order; schedule maintenance/repairs as needed

Requirements: 

  • 2+ Years Supervisory or Operations experience required.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills – position requires ability to interact and communicate with staff, volunteers, and community (pantry clients and donors).
  • Knowledge of warehouse safety, storage practices, and inventory management required.
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record required.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel and Word
  • Strong organization and time management skills required
  • Food Manager Certification, and/or certified in food handling safety standards desired (will provide training if needed)
  • Must be able to safely operate a forklift and 24’ box truck (will provide training if needed)
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, and lift boxes up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings and weekends.

Desired Skills

  • Spanish or other language skills
  • Training in de-escalation techniques

There is some flexibility in the work schedule as we set up the food distribution schedule.This position reports to Executive Director of Eat for Equity and works out of the Minneapolis warehouse.
