E4E Boston for Proyecto Doctoritas: Sunday, September 23

After a summer hiatus, Eat for Equity Boston returns on Sunday, September 23, to help raise money for Proyecto Doctoritas, a community health project in Guatemala.

Proyecto Doctoritas (“Project Little Doctors”) seeks to improve the overall health of El Triunfo, a rural village in eastern Guatemala, while also educating and empowering young women. In 2010, a group of students at Wellesley College collaborated with the villagers and local health care providers to train teenage girls as community health workers (doctoritas). As compensation for their service, the doctoritas receive full scholarships to attend middle school, something they would not be able to afford otherwise. Currently, the sustainable project is entirely run by the villagers, and especially the ten girls as they continue their monthly health lessons during individual visits with families. In the US, Wellesley students are working on raising money to continue providing scholarships to the doctoritas ($500 to send a girl to middle school for a year).
